Why the Fantasy Art Community Needs Its Own Marketplace (And What We're Doing About It)

Published on
June 4, 2025

In the golden age of fantasy storytelling, where Dungeons & Dragons is mainstream, indie TTRPGs are thriving, and self-published fantasy books are booming — you’d think fantasy artists would have more tools, not fewer.

But if you’re a fantasy illustrator, mapmaker, or character artist… you know the truth.

You're either buried on Etsy next to cat mugs and AI knockoffs, or you're managing your business through a tangled mess of DMs, spreadsheets, and payment links. And buyers? They’re wandering through Reddit threads, asking “where do I even find a good fantasy artist?”

This isn’t a niche problem. It’s a platform problem.
And we’re building the fix.

The Problem Artists Are Facing

If you’re a fantasy artist, you already know how exhausting it is to just be seen. You’re not just creating, you’re marketing, quoting, invoicing, chasing leads, and updating links in bios. Platforms like Etsy, Ko-fi, and Gumroad were never built for your kind of work. They were built for everything, which means they work best for nothing.

Even Etsy’s own Seller Handbook acknowledges that creators are expected to drive their own traffic and visibility — a tough ask in a marketplace that treats fantasy artists the same as enamel pin resellers.

You have to bring your own audience. You have to fight for SEO. And even then? You’re competing with mass-produced digital stickers, AI-generated “art,” and a sea of copycat listings.

In fact, when DeviantArt introduced its AI art generator, DreamUp, it sparked significant controversy among artists concerned about consent and the use of their work in AI training datasets (The Verge).

Worst of all, the platforms don't help customers discover you. Your style, your specialty, your voice — it’s lost in algorithmic noise.

Fantasy artists are worldbuilders. You don’t just draw, you give form to stories, characters, campaigns, and dreams. You deserve a space that sees and supports that.

What Buyers Want (But Cant Find)

Let’s flip the perspective. Say you’re a fantasy author, or a Game Master looking to commission your party’s character art. Where do you go?

Reddit? Discord? Etsy? Instagram hashtags?

It’s a wild guess every time. You might find someone amazing — or you might get ghosted, scammed, or end up sorting through AI-generated portfolios pretending to be human.

Communities like r/ArtistBeware exist for a reason. Buyers and artists alike are navigating scams, ghosting, and unclear commission terms with little platform support.

And as Dungeons & Dragons celebrates its 50th anniversary with over 85 million global fans engaging with the brand in the past year, the demand for fantasy art commissions is growing — from character portraits to homebrew world maps, and everything in between (Axios).

But despite that surge in interest, there’s still no search engine for “Cel-shaded character in painterly style, open for commissions.”There’s no filter for “fantasy book cover artists with a dark-academic aesthetic.”

Until now.

The Mythari Mission – A Platform Built for Fantasy Creators

We created Mythari because we were tired of watching talented artists get buried, and buyers give up trying to find them.

Mythari is a curated fantasy art marketplace built specifically for:

  • Fantasy illustrators
  • TTRPG character artists
  • Sci-fi and speculative fiction concept artists
  • Mapmakers and visual storytellers
  • Self-published authors and indie developers looking for artists

But Mythari isn’t just a storefront. It’s a platform designed for real commission management, digital art sales, and, most importantly, artist discoverability.

We bring buyers to the artist. Not the other way around.

We’re building tools that let artists be found by:

  • Style (anime, painterly, line art, cel-shaded, and more)
  • Genre (dark fantasy, high fantasy, post-apocalyptic, cosmic horror, etc.)
  • Availability (open for commissions, bundles for sale, coming soon)

This isn’t about fighting the algorithm. It’s about stepping outside of it entirely.

Whats Next – Building a Home Together

Right now, Mythari is in early beta, but the foundation is in place. And we’re inviting you to help shape it.

Whether you're an artist tired of platform workarounds, or a buyer who wants to support real creators with real talent, Mythari is being built for you.

We’ll be using this blog to:

  • Share insights and resources for artists (like how to write better listings or earn passive income)
  • Give buyers helpful tips on commissioning, collecting, and supporting creators
  • Feature interviews, portfolios, and behind-the-scenes development on Mythari itself

And if you're reading this now you're early. That’s something special. You’re part of a movement that puts creativity, community, and craftsmanship first.
